"...a pick up of undying classics selected and lonesome by the Queen herself"Amazon.com
Everyone grows up... even rappers. Pioneering womanlike MC Queen Latifah shows a newfound spin of majority on The Dana Owens Album. A set of standards the rapper/actress decided to cover, the manuscript facilities a host of jazz classics and R&B favorites.

Latifah is at her charming best when personification the moist summons on Al Green's "Simply Beautiful." With a little assistance from Green himself, Latifah's vocals slip over the warm, organ-drenched instrumental. The outcome is one that functions today as well as it would have several years ago. Similarly, the big band-backed "Baby Get Lost" swings with bluesy slit that is pristine nostalgia.

However, it's when Latifah mines more customary transport that the manuscript seems to hita snag. Fans of James Moody's "Moody's Mood for Love" might want to jump over Latifah's version, as it misses the pointed soundness of the original. Her delivery of "I Put a Spell On You" doesn't falter, but it's not considerable either. It ends up being the kind of opening that finds you all the time watchful for more but never removing it. The same can be pronounced for her cover of the Mamas & the Papas' "California Dreamin'."

That said, with Latifah's new critically acclaimed spin in the movie Chicago, this album's timing couldn't have been better. And with assistance from mythological writer Arif Mardin (Aretha Franklin), The Dana Owens Album is an engaging and considerable new section in the star's different career. --Rashaun Hall
